Siena took a 3-2 lead into the second quarter before giving up nine unanswered goals to No. 4 Johns Hopkins in an 11-3 season-opener loss Friday evening in Baltimore, Md. The Blue Jays peppered the Saints with 37 shots during the game and held a 30-15 shot margin in the final three quarters. Siena newcomers scored all three goals as freshman Bryan Neufeld tallied two and junior transfer Jordan Loftus scored one.
Siena (0-1) got off to a good start as Neufeld twice gave his team a one-goal lead in the first quarter, the first one unassisted and the second off a pass from senior Chris Zarins. But Johns Hopkins (1-0) tied it up eight minutes into the second quarter on a goal from Mark Bryan. Five minutes later Kyle Wharton scored his second of the game to give the Blue Jays the lead for good. Hopkins carried the 4-3 lead into halftime.
It took just nine seconds for the Blue Jays to extend the lead to 5-3 in the third quarter as Boyle scored his first of four goals. Johns Hopkins outshot Siena 13-0 in the third quarter and scored four goals to make it 8-3 entering the final period. Neufeld was the only Siena player to register a multi-point game as his two goals led the way for the Saints.
Sophomore Tom Morr posted eight saves in goal for Siena, while Mike Gvozden made eight stops for Johns Hopkins.
Senior Scott Montgomery won 11-of-18 face-offs.
Siena returns to action Wednesday when they host cross-town rival and #17 ranked UAlbany at 3 p.m.
