Camille Norman scored a pair of goals and added two steals but it was not enough as Claremont-Mudd-Scripps edged past the Siena water polo team 6-5 Tuesday evening in California. The loss drops the Saints to 1-4 as they return east, while the Athenas improve to 3-0.
In what was a tightly contested battle throughout, no team ever enjoyed a lead of more than one goal. After Claremont took at 2-1 lead after one period of play, the score became tied 3-3 at the half and remained tied at 5-5 heading into the final period before the Athenas tallied the lone goal of the fourth which proved to be the game winner.
Additional Siena goal scorers included Lauren Garrigan, Nicole Hagi and Chelsea Reczek who each notched one apiece. Hagi added an assist to go along with a pair of steals, while Devan Ragg tallied team-highs with two assists, four steals and two ejections drawn.
Lynh Nguyen made six saves in goal and added an assist in the first half of action. Reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week Jennifer Kissel added seven saves and two steals, but was saddled with the loss in relief.
Siena returns to the east coast Saturday for the ECAC Championships in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on the campus of MAAC rival Marist. The Saints, which are seeded seventh for the tournament, will take on second seeded Brown in their opening game at 12 noon.
