Siena women's lacrosse held a 5-4 advantage at halftime, but couldn't hold on as Canisius tallied the first three goals of the second half and went on to win 11-8 Friday evening in Buffalo, N.Y. The Saints drop their second conference game in a row after a 6-1 start in non-conference action. Deirdre McQuillan and Lindsey Rosecrans each scored two goals in the loss.
The two schools battled in a first half that saw neither team gain more than a one-goal advantage. McQuillan scored with 21 seconds remaining in the opening stanza to give the Saints a 5-4 halftime lead.
Canisius came out strong in the second half and quickly claimed the lead for good. Brett Poissant scored her third goal of the night 1:13 into the period and Brown notched her first goal of the night 89 seconds later. Callahan completed the run with her first goal at the 3:32 mark to give the Griffs a 7-5 advantage.
After Siena cut the Griffs lead to one, Canisius responded with three goals in 1:38 span to grab a four-goal advantage. Martinez sparked the run with her team-leading 29th goal of the season followed by Taylor Gray and Poissant to give the Griffs a 10-6 lead. Canisius would then hold on for the 11-8 victory.
Siena held a 23-21 advantage in shots. Allison Daley made 11 saves in the win while Kristin Concordia made eight saves in defeat.
Siena returns to action on Sunday when they host Niagara at Siena Turf Field at 11 a.m.
