The Siena water polo team finished its MAAC opening weekend 1-3 following a pair of losses on Sunday in New Rochelle, N.Y. Siena (8-13, 1-3) fell to Marist 13-7 and Wagner 7-6.
In the opener, the Saints and Red Foxes traded goals throughout the first half and were all nodded up at 4-4 entering intermission. But Marist exploded for six third period goals to go on top and put the game away.
The MAAC's leading scorer Lauren Garrigan added four more goals for the Saints to lead all scorers while teammates Gina Guevara, Devan Ragg and Lauren Biehle added the other Siena tallies. Lynh Nguyen made six saves for Siena and Jennifer Kissel added four.
Marist was led by Kristen Barnett and Emily St. Omer Roy who each recorded hat tricks. Jessica Getchius added nine saves in goal for the Red Foxes who have now won all 20 meetings all-time against the Saints.
In the final game of the day, the Saints dropped their second one-goal loss of the weekend in falling to the Seahawks. The Saints opened an early 3-1 lead after one period and led 6-5 heading into the fourth before their offense dried up, allowing Wagner to score the only two goals of the final period to come from behind and secure the win.
Garrigan concluded a stellar weekend, notching three more goals to run her tally to 16 for the four-game MAAC opening weekend, and a conference leading 64 for the season. Biehle, Ragg and Camille Norman added the other Siena scores. Nguyen secured eight saves in goals while Kissel contributed five.
The Saints return to action Saturday for MAAC games in Pennsylvania. Siena will face Iona at 2:30 p.m. and host Villanova at 5:30 p.m.
