Final Stats
Eleven minutes after he inadvertently knocked in the game tying goal for the other team, freshman Sindre Ek scored the game winner with 23 seconds left in the game to give Siena a 3-2 win over St. Bonaventure on a rain soaked Siena Turf Field Friday afternoon. It was instant redemption for Ek as he gave Siena its third win of the season.
Siena (3-1) took an early 1-0 lead on a free kick in the sixth minute. Junior midfielder Sebastien Anzevui hit a free kick that skipped off the wet turf and was knocked in by a defender for an own goal. Two minutes later, freshman goalkeeper Philip Chabot made his mark, stopping two point blank shots within three seconds. He finished with four saves in his first collegiate start.
The Saints added to their lead in the 63rd minute when freshman Daniel Alderstad sent a through ball in for Bobby Di Filippo. But Di Filippo couldn't quite get to it and the ball redirected off the goalkeeper and a defender before Alderstad followed his initial pass and ripped it into the goal.
But St. Bonaventure (1-3) battled back and scored two goals less than 10 minutes apart to tie the game. The first came off a beautiful setup. The ball was sent across the box and a player dummied it which allowed teammate Chris Leko a wide open shot. Chabot made the save, but Sam Maheu collected the rebound and finished it in the back of the net. The Bonnies caught a break on their second goal in the 79th minute when Brett Allen sent a cross in from the left side and Ek tried to clear it, but mishit it into the side netting for an own goal.
With less than a minute on the clock, the Saints counter attacked and Joe Tavernese found some running room down the right side. He sent a looping cross into the box where Ek touched it past the keeper with 23 seconds on the clock.
Siena returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Colgate. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
