ALBANY, N.Y. - Siena women's soccer tallied two first half goals and held on for a 2-1 victory against UAlbany in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon. Freshman forward Caitlin Cahalan scored the game winner in the 22nd minute and goalkeeper Laura Ettinger made nine saves to secure Siena's fourth consecutive win. Junior midfielder Cara Riley was in on both Siena goals, scoring the first one and assisting on the second.
Siena (4-1) was outshot by UAlbany (3-5) 13-7 in the first half but made the most of its opportunities. The first goal came in the 12th minute. Junior midfielder Susan Schneck sent a low cross into the penalty box that was touched forward by Cara Riley and she beat goalkeeper Breanna Maggio one-on-one to the left. Ten minutes later, Riley struck again when Lindsay Tegas passed her the ball in traffic at the top of the box. Riley played it through the middle and Cahalan received it, turned and shot it past Maggio for the 2-0 lead.
The majority of UAlbany's shots in the first half were from the outside and easily turned away by Ettinger.
But the Great Danes turned up the heat in the second half and scored in the 57th minute. Chelsea DeVerna stole the ball from Siena's defense and shot the ball inside the far post. UAlbany controlled the second half and tested Ettinger a few times. With 12 minutes left, DeVerna played a through ball to the right side and Katie Grant hit a low rocket at the near post. Ettinger went down and made the save.
Siena held on for the win despite being outshot 22-12 in the game and facing constant pressure in the second half. The Saints are now undefeated against their cross-town rival the past four meetings. Siena has a 6-1-2 record against UAlbany since 2000 and ties the all-time series at 9-9-2.
Siena returns to action this Friday when it hosts Quinnipiac. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
