LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Senior midfielder Marissa Shibley brought the Saints back twice in the final 15 minutes of regulation and sophomore Lindsay Tegas scored the golden goal just over three minutes into overtime as they defeated Quinnipiac 4-3 Friday afternoon at Siena Field. Shibley's two second half goals were the first of her career at Siena and mark the team's fifth straight win.
Siena (5-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute of the game on Tegas' first goal of the season. Junior midfielder Cara Riley sent a cross from the right side through a group of players in front of the goal and Tegas finished it at the far post. Quinnipiac (1-3) controlled the remainder of the half and outshot the Saints 11-5. But the Bobcats only forced goalkeeper Laura Ettinger to make one save in the first 45 minutes.
Quinnipiac took advantage of their scoring chances in the second half with goals in the 62nd and 70th minutes to pull ahead of Siena 2-1. The first goal came after a flurry of action in front of Ettinger following a corner kick. Quinnipiac's first shot hit the post, its second was saved off the goal line by Susan Schneck but the third was shot into the net by Furtuna Velaj. The second goal came off a free kick. Velaj hit a low ball into the box and Kristina Del Mistro tipped it into the left side netting.
Shibley entered the game for the first time in the 71st minute. Six minutes later she tied the score with a 34-yard strike that beat goalkeeper Kendra Margulies just under the crossbar. The moment was short-lived for the Saints, as Quinnipiac scored the go-ahead goal just 37 seconds later. A long ball was headed out of the box by Samantha Butzke, but Shauna Edwards was all alone outside the box and she labeled her shot for the left side netting.
With less than a minute remaining, Shibley brought the Saints back once more. Head coach Steve Karbowski shouted for Shibley to take a free kick from 25 yards out that was sure to be Siena's last opportunity. Shibley sent a bending ball over Margulies and into the back of the net, tying the game for the second time in 12 minutes.
Tegas, playing as a forward for the banged up Saints, scored the golden goal three minutes into overtime. The ball was sent into the box and a defender fell over it, allowing Tegas unmarked to shoot it past Margulies for the game winner. It was Siena's third overtime game of the season; all of which resulted in wins. Ettinger made four saves in the win and Margulies made seven in defeat.
Siena returns to action this Sunday when it hosts Vermont. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
