LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena women's soccer scored three unanswered goals, with two in the final 12 minutes of the game, to come from behind and defeat Vermont 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Siena Field. Senior captain Christina Macera tallied the game winner in the 79th minute and freshman Ashleigh Barone scored an insurance goal one minute later. Siena has scored 10 of its 14 regulation-time goals in the second half this season.
Vermont (0-6-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute when Megan Rozumalski took a corner and it went off goalkeeper Liz Barna, who was trying to punch it clear, and into the net. Siena (6-1) got it back in the 41st minute on sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Sharo's first career goal. She took a pass at the left side of the penalty box and shot it to the right of goalkeeper Eliza Bradley. Sharo had a productive game with a goal, an assist and almost had another assist when she put Barone in on a through ball.
As they've done so many times this season, the Saints turned up the heat in the second half. They outshot Vermont 21-3 and kept the ball across midfield for most of the half. Macera made it 2-1 in the 79th minute. Junior midfielder Cara Riley hit a free kick into the box and Macera touched it in at the back post. One minute later, Barone scored an insurance goal off a corner kick. Sharo sent it in and Barone deflected it in at the near post. Barone led all players with seven shots. She was denied several times by Rozumalski, but earned her goal at the end of the game.
Barna (2-0) made three saves in the win and Rozumalski made 10 saves in defeat.
Siena returns to action on Friday when it hosts Saint Peter's in the MAAC opener. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
