LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - After Siena gave up the tying goal with 60 seconds on the clock, junior midfielder Susan Schneck scored the golden goal and the Saints defeated New Hampshire 3-2 in double overtime Sunday afternoon. Schneck buried the rebound that came off Ashleigh Barone's initial shot. Schneck (1G, 1A) and Barone (1G, 2A) combined for seven points including the game winning goal.
New Hampshire (1-2) took a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute on a goal by Allie Coppenrath. Morgan Keefe played a low cross at the six yard box and Coppenrath finished it in the back of the net.
Siena (1-1) tied the game eight minutes later on freshman Caitlin Cahalan's first collegiate goal. Kaitlyn Sharo sent a cross to the far post where Cahalan headed it past goalkeeper Ally Yost. The Saints struck again at the 84:03 mark with Barone's first goal of the season. Schneck touched a ball through the defense and Barone ran onto it and shot it in the left side netting.
With 60 seconds remaining in the game, UNH tied the game to force overtime. Stephanie Gilkenson crossed the ball to Keefe who headed it in at the near post. But the Saints showed their resiliency and big moment play in overtime. Tabitha Tice shouldered a ball to Barone who ripped a shot that was saved by Yost. Schneck collected the rebound and scored the golden goal in the 102nd minute.
Goalkeeper Laura Ettinger made nine saves in the win and Yost made four in defeat.
Siena returns to action this Friday when it travels to Providence. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
