Loudonville, N.Y. - In a game where both field hockey teams had to combat the elements in addition to their opponents, Robert Morris (4-9, 1-1) stunned Siena (2-11, 0-2) 2-1 in overtime Friday at Siena Turf Field.
The cold and rainy weather in Loudonville wasn't an optimal game-day situation, and that was reflected in the defensive struggle that comprised the first half. Neither team scored despite a total of eight penalty corners, seven of which were taken by the Saints.
Sophomore Olivia Whelly opened the scoring in the second half, finding the back of the net for the first time in her career as a Saint. In the 45th minute, she streaked down the baseline, into the circle, and fired one past the Robert Morris goalkeeper. This was the only shot taken by Siena in the second half.
The Colonials were outshot 6-1 in the first half, but used an unassisted goal from Julie Spierckel to tie the game in the 55th minute. With less than a minute left in the first overtime period, Alicia Straining fired one home off a rebound to give Robert Morris their first conference win of the season.
Siena will next be in action at home Sunday afternoon at 1 P.M. This is the program's Senior Day, and a pregame ceremony will be held to honor captains Lisa Heimerle and Brittany Moran.
