ALBANY, N.Y. - Siena clawed back from a 12-point deficit to force overtime against UAlbany Saturday night at the Times Union Center, but the Saints were outscored in the final five minutes for the second straight game, losing the annual Albany Cup matchup to the Albany Great Danes 88-82.
"It's frustrating, but you have to give Albany credit," said Siena head coach Mitch Buonaguro. "They played well down the stretch, and they deserved to win."
Albany (4-5) got out to a fast start, jumping out to a double-digit first-half lead. The Saints (2-5) cut it to an eight-point deficit at the half, and pecked away in the final 20 minutes of regulation despite foul trouble eventually benching starters OD Anosike and Clarence Jackson.
In overtime, though, the Albany offense was once again firing on all cylinders. The Great Danes made all four field goal attempts they took in the extra period, and also made eight of nine free-throws. Tim Ambrose led Albany with 27 points, while Logan Aronhalt scored 24 and Mike Black added 16.
"You're not going to beat Albany when their three best players are scoring 27, 24, and 16 points," Buonaguro said.
On the plus side, Ryan Rossiter was his usual self Saturday. Not only did he score his 1,000th career point, he posted yet another double-double. His 28-point, 13-rebound performance was complemented by a stellar outing from freshman Trenity Burdine. His 14 points in relief of injured forward Owen Wignot were a new career-high.
"Trenity stepped in and played really well," Buonaguro said. "I was really happy for him."
Siena will be home again next Friday night for a key matchup against MAAC rival Fairfield. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Times Union Center.
