Sophomore Bryan Neufeld scored a career-high seven goals at Stony Brook, but the Saints couldn't slow down the Seawolves' offense and lost 21-14 in their season opener Saturday afternoon. Stony Brook's Jordan McBride tallied eight goals in the win.
Stony Brook (1-0) jumped all over the Saints and led 12-2 to start the game. McBride scored six goals during that span.
After allowing two early goals in the third quarter, Siena (0-1) made a charge and rattled off six straight. Neufeld had four during that run and he finished with seven goals on eight shots. But Stony Brook matched Siena the rest of the way.
Siena missed Scott Montgomery '09 at the faceoff X. The Saints won just 10-of-39 draws and Stony Brook had a 47-19 edge in ground balls.
Stony Brook, who was picked co-favorite in the America East Preseason Coaches' Poll, converted 4-of-7 extra man opportunities. The Saints ranked second in the nation last season on man-down with a .817 percentage.
Senior goalie and Preseason All-MAAC selection Brent Herbst made 14 saves in the loss. He faced 47 shots.
Siena entered the game short-handed. Starting attackman and last year's second leading scorer Jordan Loftus, co-captains Mike Whalen and Matt Leithead and long poles Faus Bernabo and Joe Vaccari did not play.
Freshman Danny Martinsen scored two goals in his first collegiate game.
The Saints return to action next Sunday when they play at Johns Hopkins. The game starts at noon and will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
