Final Stats
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Air Force registered 41 shots, but under heavy pressure only put 14 on cage. Siena goalie Brent Herbst took it from there, making 12 saves and leading the team to a 5-2 non-conference win Tuesday afternoon at Siena Turf Field.
Sophomore Bryan Neufeld and senior Ryan Duggan provided Siena's offense, scoring three goals and two respectively. Neufeld has recorded a point in every game of his career (24), moving into seventh place on the national point scoring streak.
Siena (3-3) scored less than a minute into the game as Shaun Dunn found Neufeld on the right side of the crease for the open shot. The Saints made it 2-0 when Duggan scored with three seconds left in the quarter.
After 36 scoreless minutes, Jimmy Curran broke the ice and cut the deficit to 2-1. Siena answered with a goal from Duggan a minute later.
With time winding down in the third quarter, Adam Paranka passed to Curran who was wide open on the crease and he fired it past Herbst with .3 seconds on the clock.
Air Force (1-5) tried mounting a comeback and registered 15 shots in the fourth quarter, but Herbst kept them off the scoreboard. Air Force averaged 7.1 goals/game entering today's game.
Neufeld made it 5-2 with 6:36 left in regulation. Freshman Danny Martinsen whipped a pass from behind the cage and Neufeld quick-sticked it past Brian Wilson at the top of the crease.
The Saints had been 0-5 all-time against Air Force prior to today's meeting.
Siena's man-down unit stifled the Falcons and killed all five of their extra-man opportunities. Air Force's leading scorer, Zack Carroll failed to record a point. He led all players with 11 shots but put just one on goal. Sophomore Derek Favara led the Saints with two caused turnovers.
The two goals Siena allowed are the fewest since last year's MAAC Championship semifinals when it defeated Providence 7-1.
The Saints return to action on Saturday when they play Providence at 1 p.m. The Friars left the MAAC after last season to join the newly formed Big East conference.
