Final Stats

After a startling come-from-behind win at UConn in the season opener, Siena hit the replay button. The Saints found themselves in another 1-0 deficit in the second half, but their quick-strike offense scored four goals in less than 30 minutes and they defeated Stony Brook 4-2 Friday evening in Stony Brook, N.Y.

Junior Ashleigh Barone and freshman Brittany Pfaff each scored two goals in the victory.

Stony Brook (0-2), who was picked second in the America East preseason poll, took a 1-0 lead off a free kick (51') on a goal by Debbie Aller. It didn't last long. Pfaff tied the game four and a half minutes later when she received a through ball from Lindsay Tegas and placed her shot inside the right post.

Barone scored her first goal of the season (61') off a corner kick to give Siena a 2-1 lead. The ball was loose in the box, she collected it and shot it off the crossbar and it bounced straight down and over the goal line. But just like the UConn game Siena couldn't hold the lead. Rachel Silverman scored the equalizer five minutes later on a corner kick.

"Stony Brook was quick and their attacking midfielders were very creative," head coach Steve Karbowski said. "Their only goals were off a corner kick and a free kick so we didn't give up any goals in the run of play. Defensively I thought we did a great job."

Barone struck again (78') with her vintage speed and power challenging the defense. She won the ball and from the right side shot it over the keeper into the far post.

Pfaff tacked on an insurance goal in the 85th minute, giving her three goals in her first two collegiate games.

"She's more impressive every game," Karbowski said. "So far she's done more than anyone could ask and it's been fun to watch."

So far, Siena (2-0) looks like the surging second half team of last year. The Saints have scored all seven of their goals this season after halftime (one in overtime). Siena scored 22 of its 29 regulation-time goals in the second half last season.

Siena goalkeeper Elizabeth Barna (1-0) earned the win with three saves.

Tegas had two assists in 42 minutes off the bench.

The Saints return to action next Friday when they host Providence in the home opener at 4 p.m.
