After coming excrutiatingly close to winning the MAAC Championship four months ago, the Siena men's golf team was itching to get back to the links with something to prove. On Saturday they opened the new season strong, shooting their way to a fourth place standing following the first round of the Navy Fall Invitational in Annapolis, Md.

The Saints placed two players under par in the first round as the Green and Gold shot a team score of 290 to place just off the lead. Delaware (274) takes the clubhouse lead into Sunday, followed by Towson and Georgetown in the 16-team field.

Senior Don DeNyse III and junior Justin Deitz shot identical scores of 69 (-2) to lead the Saints and rank tied for fifth individually overall. Deitz led the Saints with a 33 on the front nine, while DeNyse paced the team with a 33 on the back nine.

Towson's John Duthie shot a -8 round of 63 which was good enough for the second lowest round in the 17-year history of this event.

David Gushee (75), Jess Esposito (77) and Jeff Smith (81) rounded out the Siena contingent.

Final round action tees off Sunday morning at the Naval Academy Golf Course.
