Justin Deitz and David Gushee shot final round scores of 73 to lead Siena Men's Golf to a fifth place tie with Villanova at the Navy Fall Invitational in Annapolis, Md. Deitz and Don DeNyse III both finished in the top-20 individually in the Saints' season opener.
Siena, which stood fourth after the first 18 holes of action, finished with a two-day team score of 591 to tie the Wildcats for fifth in the 16-team field. Delaware (569) led wire to wire to capture the team championship.
After shooting a -2 round of 69 in perfect conditions Saturday, Deitz fought hard over the final 18 in wet and cool conditions that inflated the scores of everyone on Sunday. With a round of 73, Deitz shot even par for the tournament to finish sixth overall, nine strokes behind individual champion John Duthie of Towson.
Gushee and Jeff Smith both improved their scoring by two strokes Sunday despite the inclement weather, while Jess Esposito shot identical rounds of 77. DeNyse shot a 78 in the final round, but still placed high in finishing tied for 16th overall.
Siena returns to the links for its second of four fall invitationals next weekend. The Green and Gold will participate in the annual Leo Keenan Invitational hosted by St. Bonaventure.
