After Siena field hockey honored the five members of its senior class Sunday morning, the Saints went out in search of their first-ever win over Bryant. Unfortunately, the Green and Gold couldn't capitalize on Michaela Sullivan's equalizer, and fell 2-1 to the Bulldogs in their 2011 finale.
Bryant (8-10, 2-5 NEC) struck first, as Katherine Andrusin scored off an assist from Courtney Landi off an assist during a scrum in front of the cage. The Bulldog offense kept firing shots, but were turned away for the rest of regulation thanks to a stellar performance from sophomore goalkeeper Beth Meyers, who stopped 18 shots. Her third save early in the first half broke Siena's single-season record, previously held by Renee Clavette '10, and she finished with 231 on the year.
Siena (0-18, 0-7 NEC) kept looking for opportunities, and finally found one in the 54th minute. Sophomore Cory dela Gorgendiere found classmate Michaela Sullivan, who beat the fallen goalkeeper for her second game-tying goal of the season. The two teams traded blows for the rest of regulation, but after 70 minutes, the score remained deadlocked at 1-1.
Overtime saw the Bulldogs pound the cage relentlessly, and they outshot the Saints 9-2 during the extra period. Siena had a chance to win the game on a corner in the 80th minute off a corner. However, not only was Olivia Whelly's shot stopped by Bryant's goalkeeper, but the Bulldogs beat the Saints back in transition as well, and Bryant's Mallory Hancock beat Meyers off the assist from Andrusin for the season-ending golden goal.
