LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena's offense is alive and well. For a second straight game the Saints eclipsed 70 points and this time it was enough for a 73-65 victory over Rhode Island Saturday afternoon at UHY Court at the ARC. Cristina Centeno led four Siena players in double figures with 18 points.
Last season the Saints (1-2) struggled on offense, only scoring 70 points or more once. But buoyed by a sensational second half, Siena accomplished that feat for the second time in three games to start the season.
After the teams played to eight ties and seven lead changes in the first half, the second stanza was all Siena.
Rhode Island (1-3) harbored a 32-30 lead at intermission, but the Saints opened the second half on a 9-2 run and never trailed again. Siena scored 15 points in the half's first five minutes and would go on to lead by as much as 12.
The Saints, which shot 45.8% (27-59) for the game, connected on 51.9% (14-27) of its shots in the second half.
Siena received contributions from a number of players in what was a complete team win. The Saints distributed the ball well, dishing out 19 assists on their 27 field goals.
Centeno added seven rebounds and for a third straight game dished out five assists, while Maja Gerlyng scored 15 of her 17 points in the second half. Clara Sole Anglada added a career-high 14 points to go along with eight rebounds and Lily Grenci contributed 13 points on 5-8 shooting.
Corinne Coia led three Rams in double figures with 14 points. Like Siena, URI shot well at 43.6% (24-55), but was hamstrung by 19 turnovers which led to 22 Siena points.
The Saints return to the hardwood for the program's 1,000th all-time game next Friday. Siena takes to the road for the first time in the 2011-12 season with a trip to Greensboro, N.C. to face North Carolina A&T for a 2 p.m. tip.
