Siena water polo returned to the pool Saturday at Marist to open up MAAC play, and did so with mixed results. The Saints fell to Iona 18-13, but rebounded to crush Villanova 13-4 later in the day.
Siena (7-10, 1-1 MAAC) kept up with Iona through the first two periods of play, trailing just 7-5 after 16 minutes. However, the Gaels outscored the Saints 6-3 in the third stanza, and Siena could not close the gap. Nicole Hagi led Siena with four goals, while fellow senior Molly Chamberlain added three.
The second game's outcome was never in doubt, as Siena rushed out to a 5-2 lead over the Wildcats and cruised from there. Hagi and Chamberlain once again led the way, with each senior tallying three goals, while classmates Camille Norman and Devan Ragg both added two. Meanwhile, Stephani Pouder was solid in net, stopping seven of 11 Villanova shots.
Siena returns home Sunday for home games against Wagner and Marist. This doubles as Senior Day for the Saints, and the team's five fourth-year student-athletes will be honored during a ceremony scheduled for 1:15 p.m.
