Box Score
Coming off a blowout loss at Hofstra, Siena field hockey lashed out with one of the strongest offensive showings in recent program history on Sunday. Unfortunately for the Saints, 25 shots and two goals weren't enough, as Davidson posted a 4-2 victory.
Siena (0-6) fired their most shots in a game in nearly two years, since the Saints tallied 36 against Robert Morris on October 11, 2009. The Green and Gold held a four-shot advantage over the visiting Wildcats, and even struck first, with sophomore Michaela Sullivan scoring her second goal of the season in the third minute off a pass from Olivia Whelly.
Davidson (3-3), who entered the week receiving votes in the Kookaburra/NFHCA rankings, threatened to break the game open, scoring the game's next four goals. However, the Saints got back in the game in the 52nd minute, when a hard foul in the circle resulted in a penalty stroke. Senior Mackenzie Smith took the shot, and fired it inside the right post to cut the deficit to 4-2. Siena would have several chances in the waning minutes, but all of them were turned away.
Sophomore goalkeeper Beth Meyers, who leads the nation in saves per game, turned away eight shots, while senior Rachelle Grover chipped in with a key defensive save in the first half. The Saints return home on Wednesday, facing #16 UAlbany at 4 p.m. at Siena Turf Field.
