Siena water polo opened the 2012 season with a split of their first two games Saturday. The Saints fell 13-7 to Bucknell and topped Gannon 14-11 in the first day of competition at the Bison Invitational.
In the day's first game against tournament host Bucknell, the Saints got off to a rough start, allowing six consecutive goals in the first period and a half of play. That proved to be too deep a hole for the Saints to dig out of, although Siena did play the Bison to a 5-5 stalemate in the second half. Sophomore Melanie Boehrig led the Saints with three goals in the losing effort, including both of Siena's fourth-period scores.
Things turned around for the Green and Gold later that day, though, as senior Katie Ness anchored a strong offensive showing for the Saints in their first win of the season. Her five-goal, four-assist effort was complemented by two goals from Boehrig, senior Traci Robertson, and junior Rebecca Robinson, and defensively, freshman goalie Madeline Hurley stopped 10 shots in the victory.
Siena returns to action at the Bison Invitational on Sunday, where they'll face regional powers Hartwick and Princeton at 12:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. respectively.
