Siena Offense Stymied in Sunday Sweep

April 1, 2012

Siena water polo dropped to 2-5 in MAAC play and 0-3 on the weekend with two losses at Wagner Sunday. The Saints fell 12-2 to Marist before dropping an 11-5 decision to the host Seahawks in Staten Island, N.Y.

Siena (7-18, 2-5 MAAC) started off very competitively with the Red Foxes, a perennial MAAC power. The Saints were down just 2-1 after one period of play, but Marist proceeded to score 10 of the game's final 11 goals. Stephanie Bundas and Lea Allen scored for the Green and Gold in the losing effort, while Katie Ness had an assist and four steals and Madeline Hurley recorded 10 saves and three steals in net.

The Siena offense came out flat in the day's nightcap against Wagner. The Seahawks led 6-0 at the half and 10-1 after three quarters of play. The Saints trimmed the gap with a 4-1 advantage in the final stanza, but it wasn't enough. Melanie Boehrig led the offense with two goals and two assists, while three other Saints also scored goals.

Siena returns to the pool Saturday with their home date of the 2012 season at the Siena Swim Center. The Saints will host VMI at 10 a.m. and Iona at 4 p.m., with the program's annual Senior Day ceremony coming before the latter game.
