Detroit may have been the preseason favorite to win the MAAC, but Saturday Siena showed it's still the team to beat. The Saints broke open a 5-5 third quarter tie with nine unanswered goals and routed the Titans 15-8 in Michigan. The surging Saints have won six straight overall and 14 straight MAAC road games.
A rematch of last season's MAAC Championship Game and arguably the most anticipated conference contest of this regular season provided the same result - a Siena (7-3, 3-0) blowout. The Saints ran away with last year's title 12-3 and today's seven-goal win is the team's largest margin of victory this season.
Siena led 5-2 early, but Detroit (5-6, 2-2) closed the gap to 5-4 at the half. The Titans eventually tied things at 5-5 with 13:28 remaining in the third quarter and it appeared that the game was headed to a great finish. But that would not be the case.
The Saints responded with nine goals over a 17-minute span, breaking the tie and turning the game into a rout.
Chris Roth accounted for five points during the run and finished with a career-high seven points for the game. Roth tied a career-high with five goals, while Bryan Neufeld matched him in the scoring column with seven points of his own.
Danny Martinsen added four points including a hat trick for the Saints which out-shot Detroit, 41-29 in securing a victory in the program's 600th all-time game.
Tom Morr made nine saves and Joe Ednie picked up five groundballs while causing a team-high four of the Saints' 13 caused turnovers.
Alex Maini led the Titans with two goals and an assist, but the Saints held the MAAC's second and third leading goal scorers Joel Matthews and Shayne Adams to just a goal apiece. A.J. Levell added 13 saves in goal.
The Saints return to action Saturday at Siena Turf Field as the backend of a doubleheader with the women's lacrosse team. The men host Canisius at 3 p.m. in a game that will be televised throughout New York State on Time Warner Cable Sports.
