Surging Saints Win Eighth Straight, Cruise to MAAC Title Match

Nov. 21, 2014

Final Stats | Highlights

For the sixth time in the past 10 seasons Siena Volleyball will play in the MAAC Championship match. The red-hot Saints cruised to their eighth straight win, sweeping third seeded Manhattan 25-22, 25-16 and 25-19 in the MAAC Semifinals at HP Field House at ESPN's Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

It will be No. 1 vs. No. 2 Saturday in the MAAC Championship match as the Saints face regular season champion Marist at 2 p.m. on ESPN3 with an NCAA Tournament berth on the line. The Red Foxes knocked off defending MAAC Champion Fairfield in four sets earlier Friday in a rematch of last season's championship match won by the Stags.

Senior captain Rachel Stoklosa had a match-high 14 kills, while fellow captain and classmate Meghann Wright added a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs for the Saints (18-14) which improved to an incredible 14-1 all-time as the No. 2 seed in the MAAC Championships. Sophomore transfer Sonja Vasovic added nine kills while hitting at a .389 clip as Siena improved to a perfect 8-0 in the month of November, marking the program's longest winning streak since reeling off 16 straight during the 2007 MAAC Championship season.

Siena set the tone early with sophomore libero Bobbi Lin Kalama starting the match with back-to-back aces. Manhattan (21-12) struggled again with the Saints' service as Siena recorded 12 aces in the match including four from Kalama which was the difference in a tightly contested first set.

The Saints killed 50% of their attacks in the second set, breaking an early 8-8 tie with a 12-3 run in cruising to a commanding two-set lead.

Siena's defense was equally impressive, holding the Jaspers to just a .134 attack percentage including a match-low .049 in the final set. The Saints held an 8.5-4 edge in blocks including a decisive 56-40 margin in digs led by Kalama's 20.

With the third set knotted at 14, Siena scored three straight to reclaim the lead for good. Manhattan would close to within a point late, but could never hit their way back to a lead. The Saints ended the set and the match on a 6-2 run with Stoklosa smashing the decisive kill.

The Saints held a 40-28 edge in assists, with sophomore setter Haley Howell dishing out 34 for Siena which hasn't lost a set in dominating their first two MAAC Tournament matches.

Malia McGuinness was held to just nine kills for Manhattan which will face Fairfield in the third place game at 11 a.m. Saturday. That will be the opening act to the main event with Siena and Marist to follow. The Red Foxes have swept the regular season series each of the past two seasons, and posted a pair of four-set wins over the Saints this fall. Siena will be trying for a record ninth MAAC Championship and fifth under head coach Garvey Pierre, while Marist is in search of its first.
