Water Polo Opens at Brown Invitational

The Siena Water Polo team opened their 2014 campaign on the road Saturday night in Providence, R.I. with a double header against Brown and Marist at the Brown Invitational. The Saints dropped both matches to Brown, 14-7 and Marist, 20-11.

In the first game of the day, the Saints (0-2) opened against host Brown University. Brown got off to a strong start, scoring the first two goals of the match. Sophomore Brianna Ritota scored her first of two goals on the day to put the Saints on the board.

Brown started the second quarter on a 3-0 run before the Saints Kori Swieter and Melanie Boehrig found the back of the net as the Saints trailed 8-3 at the half. Boehrig recorded a team high three assists.

Brown was led by Olivia Santiago, Liz Rosen and Sarah Presant, each scoring two goals apiece. Brown would score seven more times in the third and fourth quarters to put the Saints away.

Rounding out the scoring for the Saints is Kimi Chavez and Stephanie Bundas each scoring their first goals of the season in the fourth. Ritota scored again on exclusion for her second goal of the match. Samantha Voelker had two assists.

In the second game of the day, the Saints faced off against conference foes Marist in a non-conference match. Marist jumped to a 3-0 lead before junior Jacquelyn Verdon scored two of her three goals in the first quarter. Melanie Boehrig led the Saints for the second straight game with a team high three assists.

Stephanie Bundas scored two goals and recorded two assists and Samantha Voelker added two more assists to her season total.

Hannah Levien, Jessica Hamby and Brook Else paced the Red Foxes as each recorded a hat trick. The Saints trailed 14-8 as Marist responded with a 4-0 run in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. The Red Foxes held on to defeat the Saints 20-11.

Last year's leading scorer Lea Allen did not make the trip as she attended her final swimming and diving meet as the Saints honored Allen on Senior Day.

The Saints are off for the next two weeks when they will head to Cambridge, Massachusetts for the MAAC/CWPA Crossover. The Saints will face Princeton and Harvard on February 22 and George Washington and Bucknell on February 23.
