Final Stats
Phil Valenti scored a game-high 22 points as Canisius rolled past short-handed Siena 83-49 in Buffalo Friday night in a game that was delayed an hour after Saints' freshman Willem Brandwijk caused the backboard to collapse and shatter with a pregame dunk.
Siena played without leading scorer Rob Poole (ankle) and leading rebounder Lavon Long (toe), depleting an already thin roster to just seven scholarship players. It was the Saints worst loss since a 95-59 setback to Iona at Madison Square Garden on January 3, 2012.
Canisius never trailed and shot 49% from the field. The Griffs led by as many as 37 and out-scored Siena 48-27 in the second half.
Siena had a season-high 22 turnovers.
Point guard Marquis Wright led Siena with 14 points and nine rebounds, but committed a season-high nine turnovers and didn't have a single assist. Wright entered the game leading the MAAC with 5.8 assists and a 2.7 assist/turnover ratio.
Siena inserted walk-on Jimmy Merrill into the game with 14:23 to play and Canisius leading 51-26.
All 11 players who saw action for Canisius scored, with seven posting at least seven points.
Siena has lost back-to-back MAAC games after defeating Niagara 79-69 at home last Thursday. The Saints and Purple Eagles meet again Sunday at 2 p.m. at Niagara.
