Nov. 5, 2015 Junior back Tara Sobierajski was named a First Team All-MAAC selection, highlighting Siena Women's Soccer's four All-MAAC honorees at the conference's awards banquet Thursday night in West Long Branch, N.J. Sophomore midfielder Madison Vasquez earned Second Team All-MAAC recognition, while freshmen Gabby Albano and Amanda Holtzman were named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team.
Named a First Team All-MAAC selection for the second straight season, Sobierajski has earned All-MAAC recognition in each of her first three seasons. She was tabbed a Second Team All-MAAC and All-MAAC Rookie Team honoree following her freshman season. The Rockaway, N.J. native has played all 1,770 of the Saints' minutes at center back this fall and anchored a defensive unit which has recorded a program single-season record nine shutouts and currently owns a team record 443-minute shutout streak. Named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 26, Sobierajski has added nine points this fall on a pair of game-winning goals to go along with five assists which ranks tied for eighth in the MAAC.
The reigning MAAC Offensive Player of the Week, Vasquez has started all 19 matches this season and leads the Saints in points (12), goals (five) and shots (48). The West Babylon, N.Y. product has also tallied a pair of game-winning goals, including in the regular season finale at Quinnipiac last week which clinched the Saints the sixth and final MAAC Tournament berth. For her performance last week, Vasquez was also named to TopDrawerSoccer's Team of the Week.
A native of Nesconset, N.Y., Albano has appeared in 17 matches at both striker and midfield coming off the bench and tallied five points on a pair of goals and an assist. Named the MAAC Rookie of the Week on Aug. 31, she scored the game-winning goals in Siena's non-conference victories over both New Hampshire and LIU Brooklyn.
Holtzman has made 11 appearances including seven starts at outside back. The Avon, Conn. product has started the Saints' last five matches, coinciding with the program's unbeaten streak and program record shutout streak.
Upstart Manhattan, which finished second in the regular season standings, dominated the major awards. The Jaspers' Brandon Lawler was named the Lids Team Sports MAAC Coach of the Year, Kristen Skonieczny was tabbed the MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year, and Jenny Bitzer earned MAAC Defensive Player of the Year honors. Monmouth's Alexis McTamney is the MAAC Offensive Player of the Year, and Quinnipiac's Nadya Gill the MAAC Rookie of the Year.
Not only have the Saints excelled on the field this year, but in the classroom as well. A program record 13 Saints were named MAAC All-Academic Team selections, reserved for student athletes who have at least reached sophomore standing and who maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better. Siena's honorees were seniors Allison Clark, Ali Lewis, Kirby O'Keefe, Liz Rogan and Michelle Yanniello, juniors Kristen Connors and Andrea Pereira and sophomores Ashley Carpenter, Kelsey Horst, Kaela Mahoney, Emily Santos, Casey Scott and Michele Tremblay.
Unbeaten in their last five matches which includes a program record four consecutive shutout victories, the sixth seeded Saints face MAAC Regular Season Champion and No. 1 overall seed Monmouth in the conference semifinals Friday at 5 p.m. in West Long Branch, N.J. The match will be broadcast on ESPN3.
