QUEENSBURY, N.Y. - Hobart erupted for six fourth quarter goals as the Statesmen defeated Siena Lacrosse 12-8 at the Adirondack Sports Complex. With temperatures stuck in the single digits in Loudonville, the Saints' home opener was moved an hour north of campus to the indoor facility.
Senior midfielder Nate Barry led the Saints (0-2) with four points including a hat trick. Senior captain Conor Prunty added three assists for Siena which never led, but pulled even with Hobart at 6-6 heading into the final quarter.
But the Statesmen (1-0) scored three times in the first 3:06 of the final stanza to open a 9-6 lead and never looked back. Taylor Vanderbeek scored all three of his goals in the second half for Hobart, while Alex Reed added a pair of goals and assists and scored the game-winner.
Hobart opened the game by scoring three times in the first 3:23 and never trailed. The Saints rallied with the next two scores and remained within two goals or less through the first three quarters in what was a tightly contested affair.
The Statesmen ultimately took a 4-3 lead at the break in a first half dominated by solid goalkeeping. Junior Tommy Cordts, who played the first half, made nine saves while Hobart's Jackson Brown made eight of his 13 saves over the first 30 minutes of action.
But the scoring would open up in the second half. Junior attackman Michael Pettit made the most of his first collegiate start by posting his first career multi-goal game. Both of Pettit's scores came in the third quarter, the second of which drew Siena even heading into the final period.
Senior captain Richie Hurley scored twice for the Saints and sophomore attackman Jordan Barlow added a goal and two assists. Senior Casey Dowd was solid at the faceoff X, winning 15 of his 24 draws while picking up a game-high nine groundballs.
Matt Opsahl and Brendan Saylor added two goals and an assist apiece for Hobart which knotted the all-time series at 2-2 as the programs met for the fourth consecutive season.
The Saints return to action next Saturday with a 1 p.m. faceoff at new Division I program UMass-Lowell.
