Final Stats
Glenville native Collin Stewart scored a career-high 21 points on 8-9 shooting lifting Monmouth to an 83-64 win at Siena Saturday night. The Saints led 21-11 with 12:15 left in the first half, but were out-scored 72-53 the rest of the way.
"We were ready to play early, but we we're unable to sustain it," Jimmy Patsos. "This is a big game for us and we're on our home court. I just think our effort for 40 minutes was not where it wants to be."
Monmouth led 34-31 at halftime after ending the half on a 12-3 run. Siena made 8-15 shots early to build the double digit lead, but missed 13 of its final 16.
The Hawks rode the momentum into the second half scoring 11 points on their first four trips to take a 45-36 lead. The advantage was still nine with 10:23 to play, but Monmouth scored seven straight to take command, 62-46, and the lead was at least 15 the rest of the way.
"At some point you have to take defense personal," Patsos said. "I'm as disappointed as anybody. Maybe we're just tired, maybe we're just worn out."
Monmouth had averaged just 48 points in their last two games, but they topped that in the second half (49). Siena played three games in six days this week and opponents averaged 45.3 points and shot 61% from the field in the second half of those contests. Monmouth last played Sunday, knocking off Canisius 44-40 at home.
The Hawks shot 53% from the field and made 50% of their tries from distance. Siena stumbled to 40% from the field and made just 3-17 threes.
Evan Hymes scored a team-high 13 points for Siena to move within 24 of 1,300 for his career. Marquis Wright had 12, Javion Ogyunyemi scored 11 and Rob Poole had 10 but needed 12 shots to get there. It was the 10th time this season the Saints have placed four or more players in double figures.
Monmouth got 17 points from Deon Jones - including his benchmark 1,000th point early in the game - and 14 from Justin Robinson.
Siena has lost five of seven to drop into eighth place in the MAAC standings. The Saints will try to get back on track Thursday night when Canisius comes to town for a 7 p.m. tip.
