LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Sophomore attack Jordan Barlow netted a hat trick and scored the game-winning goal as Siena Lacrosse won its third straight, edging St. John's 8-7 at Siena Turf Field. The victory was just the Saints' third in 20 all-time meetings against their Big East rivals.
Four different Saints (3-2) scored during a four-goal run to end the first half as Siena reclaimed a 6-3 lead at the break. Siena would never trail again, but St. John's (1-3) kept it close throughout.
After the Red Storm had rallied within 6-5 late in the third quarter, Siena received consecutive scores from senior captain Conor Prunty and Barlow to reclaim a three-goal lead at 8-5 with 13:47 to play. Prunty finished with two goals in joining Barlow with three points.
James Bonanno would pull St. John's within 8-6 with 12:20 remaining and then complete his hat trick with 23 seconds left to rally the Red Storm within a goal. St. John's would eventually win the ensuing faceoff, but precious seconds ticked off the clock as the teams battled for the initial possession and the Red Storm never got a look at a potential game-tying attempt.
Senior goalie Nick Capalbo earned his first collegiate victory between the pipes, playing three quarters and making nine saves. Junior goalie Tommy Cordts played the second quarter and stopped three shots.
The teams each took 35 shots and the Saints held a 33-27 edge in groundballs. The Saints man-down unit was excellent, killing off five of St. John's six extra-man opportunities.
Harry Burke played the second half in goal for St. John's and made seven saves while allowing just two goals to keep the Red Storm within striking distance down the stretch.
The Saints return to action next Saturday for a 1 p.m. faceoff at Robert Morris.
