LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Thirteen different Syracuse players scored and eight posted multi-point performances as the fourth ranked Orange raced past Siena Lacrosse 21-7 in the season opener at the Carrier Dome. Syracuse out-shot the Saints 50-23 and held a 40-23 edge in groundballs.
Senior captain and MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Richie Hurley picked up right where he left off from last season for the Saints, when the ranked fourth nationally in assists per game and sixth in points per game. Hurley paced Siena with a team-high five points on two goals and three assists in extending the nation's fifth longest scoring streak to 35 games.
But the highly touted Orange attack proved to be too much for the Saints to hold off. Kevin Rice led a balanced attack with six points, while Dylan Donahue added four goals and Hakeem Lecky contributed five points for Syracuse which also defeated the Saints 19-7 in last year's season opener at the Carrier Dome.
In a matchup of two of the nation's eight winningest programs over the past eight seasons, Syracuse scored five unanswered goals to take 6-1 lead after the first quarter. Hurley and classmate Nate Barry scored consecutive goals early in the second quarter to halve the deficit, but the Orange would respond to take a 9-3 lead at the break.
Syracuse ultimately scored seven unanswered goals to take a 13-3 lead early in the second half to put the game out of reach as the Saints were held scoreless for more than 17 minutes.
Syracuse controlled possession winning an astounding 25-30 faceoffs, led by Ben Williams who went 17-20 at the X with 11 groundballs. The Orange out-shot the Saints 30-10 in the second half, while holding a 24-7 advantage in groundballs in the stanza.
Freshman attack Chris Robertson was a bright spot for the Saints, tallying a hat trick in his collegiate debut. Junior Tommy Cordts (five saves) and senior Nick Capalbo (career-high eight saves) each played a half in goal for the Saints which fell to 2-17 all-time against USILA Top-20 opponents.
The Saints return to the Capital Region for their home opener Saturday when they host Hobart at 11 a.m. at Siena Turf Field.
