LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena Lacrosse scored the final six goals to rally past Quinnipiac 9-6 in the conference opener for both teams at Siena Turf Field. The Saints held the Bobcats scoreless for the final 26:49 in opening their 20th MAAC season victorious.
Siena (4-3, 1-0) posted its six-goal run spanning 19:51 bridging the third and fourth quarters to rally and win its 12th straight conference home game. Overall, the defending MAAC Champions and preseason conference favorites have now won 41 of their last 44 regular season league tilts.
The Saints dominated possession out-shooting Quinnipiac (1-5, 0-1) 56-29, but struggled to find pay dirt over the first three quarters. Siena scored on just four of its first 43 shots, allowing the Bobcats to maintain a lead deep into the contest.
Quinnipiac scored three unanswered goals over the final 3:28 of the first half to take a 5-3 lead at the break. The Bobcats ultimately made it a four-goal run, doubling up the Saints 6-3 on a Ryan Keenan goal with 11:49 remaining in the third quarter.
But Siena kept shooting and it finally paid off. Trailing 6-4 heading into the final quarter, the Saints made the most of their attempts in erupting for five goals on 14 shots in the period. Senior captains Richie Hurley and Conor Prunty each scored twice during the rally, with Prunty's go-ahead goal serving as the eventual game-winner with 7:35 remaining.
Hurley finished with four points including a hat trick, while Prunty netted two goals. Sophomore Jordan Barlow added four points on a pair of goals and assists for the Saints which have won four of five.
Junior Tommy Cordts (five saves in the first half) and senior Nick Capalbo (three saves in the second half) again split time in goal, with Capalbo earning the victory. Sophomore longstick midfielder Joe Arcarese also played a key role in the defensive effort in posting career-highs of five groundballs and three caused turnovers.
Matt Diehl scored twice to lead Quinnipiac. Bobcats' leading scorer Michael Sagl added two assists, but was a non-factor overall in being held to just one shot. Colin Nesdale made 14 saves and picked up six groundballs for Quinnipiac which has lost four straight.
The Saints return to action next Saturday with a 1 p.m. faceoff at Monmouth.
