LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Riley Hellstein and Julieanne Mascera each netted hat tricks as Fairfield defeated Siena Women's Lacrosse 11-7 in the Saints' conference opener at Siena Turf Field. Erin Mossop, Briana Sirianni and Lauren Smith each scored twice for the Saints.
Fairfield (7-3, 2-0) held a 26-13 edge in shots as Siena's (5-5, 0-1) four-game winning streak, the second longest in program history, was snapped. The Saints had entered play averaging 12.2 goals and 28 shots per game, but were held scoreless for the final 21:56. Four of Siena's goals came on free position attempts as they made the most of their six eight-meter shots.
The first half was a back and forth battle featuring three lead changes with the teams knotted at 5-5 at the break. The Stags would score three of the first four second half goals to reclaim the lead, with Siena rallying to get as close as 8-7 just over eight minutes into the stanza.
But Fairfield scored the final three goals - two from Mascera, who finished with four points - and another from Hellstein to seal the deal.
Senior captain Julia Sirianni posted game-highs of six draw controls and four groundballs. Senior Danielle DeLisio and junior Ashley Holdridge again split time in goal, making five and three saves respectively.
The Saints will look to bounce back Wednesday when they host Manhattan for a 3 p.m. opening draw at Siena Turf Field.
