LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Brad Harris scored the game-winner with just 33 seconds remaining to cap a game-ending four goal run by Detroit which rallied past the Saints to spoil Siena Lacrosse's Senior Day 14-13 at Siena Turf Field. Senior captain Richie Hurley led all scorers with his second straight six-point game for the Saints.
With their win, Detroit (7-5, 3-2) takes over sole possession of third place in the MAAC with one regular season conference game remaining. Meanwhile the Saints (5-7, 2-3) are now tied with Canisius and Monmouth for fourth. Siena concludes regular season action next Saturday night in Poughkeepsie at Marist, which earlier today clinched the MAAC Regular Season Championship. The Saints would need to beat Marist and get losses from both Canisius and Monmouth to make the MAAC Tournament. The top-four finishers qualify for the MAAC Championships.
Siena came out red-hot, scoring the first five goals in less than nine minutes to start the game. However Detroit responded with the next three goals and the game would remain close thereafter.
Nonetheless, Siena maintained the lead taking a 9-7 advantage at the break and led 13-10 heading into the final quarter. But the final period belonged to the Titans as they accounted for all of the scoring over the final 15 minutes, tallying four goals on just six total shots.
Hurley scored five of his six points for the Saints during a sensational opening half in moving into sixth place in program history with 172 career points. Classmate Conor Prunty added season-highs of four goals and five points, while freshman Chris Robertson posted his first collegiate four-goal game.
Scott Drummond led Detroit with four goals and Mark Anstead added five points including a pair of man-up goals for the Titans which were an efficient 4-6 on man-up opportunities.
Senior faceoff specialist Casey Dowd picked up nine groundballs for the Saints to move into sixth place in NCAA Division I history with 451 career groundballs. Senior Nick Capalbo and junior Tommy Cordts each played a half in goal making 11 and six saves respectively for the Saints.
The Saints return to action Tuesday when they host crosstown rival and eighth ranked UAlbany at 4 p.m. at Siena Turf Field. The game will be televised live throughout New York on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel and everywhere else on ESPN3.
