May 26, 2015 The NCAA honored six Siena athletics programs with Public Recognition Awards for achieving Academic Progress Rates (APR) in the top-10 percent of their respective sports nationally. The field hockey, men's and women's tennis, women's soccer, volleyball and water polo teams all earned recognition for their achievements in the classroom.
"We are extremely proud of the efforts of our student athletes as they continue to prioritize academic success," said Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator Lori Anctil, "Our academic support staff as well as coaches, faculty and administrators play a key role in guiding and empowering our student athletes to be leaders in the classroom. This latest report gives our Saints the recognition they deserve for their outstanding academic achievement."
According to the NCAA, which made the public recognition announcement as part of the 2014 Division I Academic Performance Plan (APP) May 20, the APR provides an annual scorecard of academic achievement. The NCAA tracks the classroom performance of scholarship student athletes on every Division I sports team.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
The men's and women's tennis team extended their streaks to seven consecutive APR awards, while water polo earned recognition for the third year in a row. Siena's MAAC Champion volleyball team, as well as the Field Hockey and Women's Soccer teams are new honorees this year.
Siena's six honored programs tied for most in the MAAC with Fairfield. Canisius had five programs honored, while Niagara had four honored.
The most recent APR report includes multi-year rates based on scores from 2010-11, 2011-2012, 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years.
