Shane Richards scored seven of his team-high 21 points in the decisive third overtime as Manhattan got past Siena 92-87 in a wild MAAC affair Monday night in Riverdale. Javion Ogunyemi had a career-high 26 points for the Saints.
"Just a great, competitive game," Siena coach Jimmy Patsos said. "That was a great basketball game. We came up a little short. We learned a lot. My freshmen are growing up. We had a couple chances, so you can't complain."
Manhattan led 88-83 with 1:31 left in triple overtime after Rich Williams' jumper, but Siena cut the lead to one with a four-point possession. After Brett Bisping made one of two free throws, Nico Clareth grabbed the rebound and kicked to Ryan Oliver for a corner three.
Williams then missed a three, but Richards grabbed a huge offensive rebound and hit a jumper to make it 90-87 with 15 on the clock. Siena didn't get a shot off on its final possession, and Richards sealed the win with a pair of free throws.
Manhattan won its sixth straight over Siena at Draddy Gymnasium and avenged an 89-54 loss at Times Union Center exactly a month ago.
Siena rallied from eight down with 6:54 left in regulation to force the first overtime. Bisping hit a jumper to tie the game at 65 with 2:09 left and neither team scored again. Rashawn Stores' three-point try to win the game was long.
The Saints had the final possession in the first overtime, but Bisping's twisting layup was off the mark. Each team had a chance at the end of the second overtime after Calvin Crawford tied the game at 79 with 45 seconds left. Ogunyemi missed with 16 seconds left, and Stores rushed jumper was off the mark as the buzzer sounded.
This was the second triple-overtime game Siena has played in Patsos' three seasons. Canisius defeated the Saints 92-88 February 16, 2014 at Times Union Center.
Ogunyemi rounded out a double-double with 11 rebounds and added five blocks. Bisping finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds, and Clareth had 13 points and four boards off the bench. Clareth played a huge part in the first extra session, finishing a breakaway jam and nailing a corner three-pointer.
Five Jaspers reached double figures.
Siena returns to action Thursday night at home against Fairfield. Fans can get a $5 ticket in the Gold Zone by showing their Dunkin' Donuts mobile app at the Times Union Center box office.
