LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- Siena Women's Lacrosse overcame both LIU Brooklyn and two lengthy lightning delays to defeat the Blackbirds 19-13 at Siena Turf Field. The Saints erupted for 12 unanswered goals spanning just 11:56 midway through the game to rally back from an early deficit.
The two separate lightning delays late in the second half lasted a combined two hours and three minutes as the game was eventually called exactly four hours after it began at 4 p.m. The first delay lasted a total of 83 minutes and came with Siena (5-2) leading 18-10 with 13:50 remaining. Play resumed at 7:10 p.m., but the teams were only able to get in just over six additional minutes before the game was halted due to a second, and ultimately final, lightning delay with 7:27 left. Following another 40-minute delay and with no end to the severe weather in sight and the game official, the contest was ultimately called.
Eight players scored including four who netted hat tricks for the Saints which are off to the second best start in the program's 20 seasons. Siena's 2009 team opened the season 6-1. Senior attack Sarah Croutier led the way with six points on four goals and two assists and added four groundballs while also causing three turnovers in a strong all-around performance for the Saints which finished their season long four-game homestand 3-1.
LIU Brooklyn (2-4) led for the majority of the first half and held an 8-5 lead late in the stanza. But Siena responded with a seven-goal flurry over the final 6:06 -- including five goals over the final 2:03 -- to rally and claim a 12-8 lead at the break. The teams combined for 20 goals, 39 shots, 40 fouls, 20 turnovers and seven yellow cards over a wild opening 30 minutes.
The MAAC's top scoring offense picked up right where it had left off to open the second half, adding five more quick scores to claim a commanding 17-8 advantage with 24:10 to play. Croutier tallied five of her six points and all four of her goals during the Saints' decisive 12-goal run.
Reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week and two-time honoree Lynnzee Miller contributed all three of her goals during the run and senior captain Lauren Smith added a pair. Smith finished with three points, while also winning 10 draw controls and added four groundballs and a pair of caused turnovers.
Junior attack Michelle Schwartz and sophomore attack Lauren Anglim also added hat tricks for Siena which held a 39-23 advantage in shots.
Carlie Robinson paced the Blackbirds with five points on the strength of four goals and added five draw controls. Rorie Crum and Mary McQueen each added hat tricks for LIU Brooklyn which was concluding its season opening six-game road trip.
Three goalies saw action for the Saints, with senior Ashley Holdridge logging the majority of the time with 30:30 of action in two separate stints and made four saves. Freshman Liv Dellanno made one save and was credited with the win after shutting out the Blackbirds during much of Siena's 12-goal run in which they reclaimed the lead and put thing away.
The Saints return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. when they head to Vermont for their final non-conference road game.
