Final Stats
Senior goalkeeper Tommy Cordts made 15 saves and preserved a one-goal lead for the final 20 minutes to lead Siena Lacrosse past Detroit 7-6 in the Motor City. Sophomore attack Chris Robertson paced the Saints offensively with a hat trick, and scored the game-winning goal.
The teams were knotted 4-4 at the half and Detroit (1-7, 1-1) completed a three-goal run to claim a 5-4 lead early in the third quarter. But the Saints (2-6, 1-2) responded with the next three goals and took a 7-5 advantage on Robertson's final goal of the day with 5:25 remaining in the third quarter.
Andy Hebden pulled the Titans within a goal just 37 seconds later on what proved to be the final score of the game thanks in large part to Cordts.
Detroit out-shot Siena 14-3 and held a 12-2 edge in groundballs in the fourth quarter, but Cordts made five of his saves during the final period to keep the Titans off the scoreboard. Overall, Cordts saved the final seven shots he faced in holding Detroit scoreless for the last 19:48 in a yeoman like effort.
Seniors Kevin Cousin, Neil Gollogly and Michael Pettit and junior Jordan Barlow all contributed goals for the Saints. Senior captain Matt Bellucci added a pair of assists.
Hebden and Alec Gilhooly finished with two goals apiece for the Titans.
The Saints return to action Saturday when they host MAAC rival Marist at 1 p.m. at Siena Turf Field. The game will be televised throughout New York on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel and elsewhere on ESPN3.
