LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- Hunter Jones scored the game-tying man-up goal with 79 seconds remaining in regulation and Eric Berger netted the decisive tally 45 seconds into overtime as Monmouth captured the fourth and final MAAC Tournament berth with a 14-13 victory over Siena Lacrosse at Siena Turf Field. The teams had entered the regular season finale in a three-way tie for fourth in the conference standings with Detroit.
Sophomore midfielder Brian Prunty netted a hat trick and finished with a team-high four points for the Saints, which finish their 2016 season with a final record of 3-10 including a 2-4 mark in the MAAC.
With their win coupled with Detroit's loss, Monmouth (7-6, 3-3) leapfrogged Canisius to claim the No. 3 seed in next week's MAAC Tournament hosted by regular season champion Quinnipiac in Connecticut. The Hawks will open against defending MAAC Champion and No. 2 seed Marist in the semifinals Thursday.
In a winner-take-all affair that would live up to its billing, Siena struck first blood. The Saints came out firing, scoring the first four goals in just 4:09 en route to building a 5-2 lead through a quarter of play. But Monmouth would score eight times in the second quarter to claim a 10-7 lead at the break in a back and forth affair.
Tim Cousin rallied Siena to within 11-10 with seven seconds remaining in the third quarter, and Prunty capped the three-goal run with the equalizer with 12:34 to play in regulation. After the Hawks reclaimed the lead, Prunty tied the score once more at 12-all with 8:01 left to set up the finish.
The Saints would take the lead late as Chris Robertson finished a feed from Prunty to put Siena back in front at 13-12 with 2:14 remaining in regulation. The Saints won the ensuing faceoff, but were flagged for a penalty which set up Jones' game-tying goal.
However Siena, which went a perfect 6-for-6 at the faceoff X in the fourth quarter thanks to the duo of Tyler Pantalone and Hunter Sanna, again won the draw to give the Saints an opportunity to have the final shot and a chance to win in regulation. But with the final seconds ticking down, Monmouth goalie Nick Hreshko turned away Robertson's shot as the game would go to overtime.
In the extra session, the Hawks gained possession on the opening faceoff. After a first attempt went high, Berger finished the second shot to send Monmouth to the MAAC Tournament.
Chris Daly (four points) and Dan Bloodgood each recorded hat tricks for the Hawks. Eamon Campbell added four points (three assists) and John Castellano dished out three assists for Monmouth.
Robertson and Cousin each finished with two goals apiece for Siena which had nine different players tally scores. Tommy Cordts recorded 12 saves in his final game donning the Green and Gold, and will graduate ranking ninth all-time in program history with 374 career stops.
Cordts was one of eight members of the Saints' Class of 2016 which was honored on Senior Day. The group finished with 27 victories and captured the program's most recent MAAC Championship as sophomores in 2014.
While the Saints say goodbye to a senior class which left an indelible mark on the program, the future is bright for a Siena Lacrosse program which is set to return its top-five and eight of its top-nine scorers while expecting to welcome back better than 82% of its goal scoring in 2017.
