Feb. 24, 2017 Siena Water Polo began the Tina Finali Invitational on Friday in Thousand Oaks, CA. In the Saints' opening game with Fresno Pacific, the Sunbirds won 13-9. In the second game of the day, the #24 Roadrunners defeated Siena 17-2. Diana Fernandez led Siena with four total goals.
Game One: Fresno Pacific 13, Siena 9
In the Saints' first game of the day, the Sunbirds jumped out to a 7-3 lead after the first quarter. Sarah Abbott, Fernandez, and Terez Touhey scored for Siena in the opening period. Touhey added two more goals in the second quarter, while Clare Bryar added one to make it an 11-6 game at the break.
Siena notched just one goal in the third, by Fernandez, while holding Fresno Pacific to one also, making it a 12-7 game with one period to go. The Saints scored two more, both by Bryar, in the final quarter, falling 13-9.
Goalkeeper Kennedy Joseph saved 15 shots for Siena and had four steals. Fernandez led the way with four ejections drawn. Bryar and Touhey added two assists each in the contest.
Game Two: #24 CSU Bakersfield 17, Siena 2
In Siena's second game of the day, #24 CSU Bakersfield recorded a 17-2 victory. Fernandez scored both goals for the Saints. Both Siena goals came in the third quarter following a 7-0 halftime lead for the Roadrunners.
Bryar assisted on both of the Saints' goals. Sarah Abbott, Nichol Feldtz, and Bryar recorded two steals each in the contest. Fernandez led the team with two ejections drawn. Joseph saved 10 shots in goal, while Carly Jackson-Clark contributed five saves and one steal for the Siena defense.
The Saints will wrap up the Tina Finali Invitational on Saturday, February 25. Siena opens against host school Cal Lutheran at 10:30 a.m. Pacific/ 1:30 p.m. Eastern. The Saints will conclude the tournament against Cal State East Bay at 3:45 p.m. Pacific/ 6:45 p.m. Eastern on Saturday.
