Siena Water Polo ended the Tina Finali Invitational on Saturday in Thousand Oaks, CA. In the Saints' opening game with Cal Lutheran, the Saints were narrowly edged 7-5. Siena was bested by Cal State East Bay in the final game of the tournament 12-6. Diana Fernandez led the Saints with six total goals.
Game One: Cal Lutheran 7, Siena 5
In the Saints' first game of the day, the Regals took a 2-1 lead in the opening period. Fernandez scored for Siena in the quarter. Cal Lutheran extended its lead to 4-1 after holding the Saints' without a goal in the second.
Nichol Feldtz put Siena on the board in the third, while the Regals added two goals to make it a 6-2 game with one quarter remaining. The Saints had their best offensive period of the game with three goals in the fourth, including two by Terez Touhey and one by Fernandez. Cal Lutheran narrowly took the win 7-5. Kennedy Joseph saved eight shots in goal for the Saints.
Game Two: Cal State East Bay 12, Siena 6
In Siena's second game of the day, the two teams played even in the opening quarter, scoring three goals each. Fernandez had two for the Saints, while Feldtz added one. In the second, Cal State East Bay held Siena scoreless, while adding two goals to take a 5-3 halftime lead.
The Pioneers had another strong period in the third, outscoring the Saints 4-1 and boasting a five goal advantage heading into the final stanza. Fernandez notched two goals in the final minutes for Siena, but Cal State East Bay would take the win, 12-6. Clare Bryar also scored for Siena in the contest.
The Saints will compete in the Harvard Invite on Saturday, March 4 and Sunday, March 5 in Cambridge, MA. Siena will take on Indiana at 3 p.m. and Brown at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday before closing out the tournament against UC San Diego on Sunday at 1 p.m.
