In a game that had eight ties and three lead changes, Siena Lacrosse fell 13-12 to Canisius at Siena Turf Field. Four of the Saints six games have been decided by one goal.
Chris Robertson led Siena (2-4, 0-2) with five points coming from three goals and two assists. He has now extended his goal-scoring streak to 19 games. Keenan Cook tallied four points off a hat-trick and one assist, while Tim Cousin added three goals.
Carter Stefaniak and Steven Coss led all scorers with six points. Stefaniak recorded five goals while dishing out one assist, while Coss added one goal and four assists for Canisius (4-3, 1-0).
Cousin opened up the scoring, but Canisius respond and then took their first lead of the game with just under eight minutes in the opening frame. Robertson scored his first goal of the game to tie the contest. Senior defender Nick Matzelevich scored the first goal of his career followed by a Robertson goal with 10-seconds left in the opening quarter to lead Canisius by one, 4-3.
Staying on the theme of ties, the Golden Griffs tied it at four. Cook scored the next two goals, followed by Cousin to push Siena ahead 7-4. Cousin wrapped up his hat-trick by the end of the second quarter as the Saints led 8-6 at halftime.
Canisius scored the opening two goals to tie the game at eight. Nick Casner put Siena back ahead with a dish from Dylan Pantalone. Following another tie game, Cook scored a man-up goal to push Siena back ahead 10-9 with one quarter to play.
After scoring the first goal of his career in the first quarter, Matzelevich picked up his second career goal to start the fourth quarter and push Siena ahead 11-9. The Golden Griffs then tallied the next three goals to lead 12-11. Robertson tallied his hat-trick and tied the game at 12 with 2:49 to play. Canisius would score and put the Golden Griffs ahead 13-12 with 2:03 left. Both teams would get good looks in the final two minutes, but Canisius was able to hold on to take the victory.
Siena will head on the road to take on Binghamton on Tuesday, March 27 at 4 p.m.
