In the first day of the final MAAC Water Polo weekend of the regular season, Siena Water Polo split as they fell to VMI 12-6 and defeated La Salle 14-9. The Saints five league wins tie the most wins in program history which the Saints also set last season. Siena's eight overall wins is the most since 2015.
Game One: VMI 12, Siena 6
"We had a difficult time converting mid game but came alive in the fourth quarter against VMI," said head coach Tamara Perea. "We continued working through to the end."
Diana Fernandez led the Saints with three goals, two ejections drawn and one steal. Kennedy Joseph stopped five shots in goal, while allowing three goals for a .625 save percentage.
VMI jumped out scoring back-to-back goals in the opening frame to quickly lead 2-0. Late in the first quarter, the Keydets tallied a powerplay goal, but Clare Bryar scored just seconds later to put the Saints on the board. VMI wrapped up the first quarter with a second power play goal to lead 4-2 after one period played.
The Keydetes held the Saint scoreless in the second quarter. VMI jumped ahead with five unanswered goals to lead 9-2 at halftime. VMI continued to hold off Siena in the third period scoring two more unanswered goals to lead 11-2 with just eight minutes left to play.
Fernandez scored the Saints first goal of the fourth period following a drawn ejection to put Siena back on the board. She then tallied another powerplay goal following a Torres ejection drawn as Siena trailed VMI 11-4. Fuertes added the third goal of the period for the Saints as they continued to fight back. The Keydetes scored a power play goal to end their scoring for the game. Sophia Torres scored with just 14 seconds left but VMI would take the win 12-6.
Game Two: Siena 14, La Salle 9
"Against La Salle, we had a slow start," Perea stated. "We made some adjustments to our defense and were able to play to our strength as a counter attacking team. I'm very pleased with the team's response to ending the first quarter down. We never looked back."
Clare Bryar led all scorers with eight points coming off of six goals and two assists. Diana Fernandez added two goals and five assists for seven points for the saints. Kennedy Joseph allowed just four goals while stopping six shots.
Following Bryar's first goal La Salle jumped ahead 2-1 with just 3:42 remaining in the first period. Daniella Fuertes would score for Siena to tie the game at two. The Explorers jumped ahead to end the first period in the lead 3-2.
La Salle led the Saints 4-2 before Bryar and Fernandez scored to tie the game at four. Sara Lopez put Siena in the lead following a drawn exclusion by Fernandez. The Saints continued to hold off the Explorers until they scored a power play goal with 49 seconds left in the second period. Siena led 7-5 at halftime.
The Saints continued to battle and keep La Salle at bay scoring three unanswered goals to lead 10-5. The Explorers registered two goals in the period, but the Saints stayed in front and led 12-7 with just one period to play.
Both teams held off the other and fought hard to pick up a league win. Bryar would score both Siena goals in the fourth period to push the Saints ahead to their fifth league win of the season 14-9.
Siena will play in their regular season finale on Sunday, April 15 against Iona. Sprint is set for 1:30 p.m.
