Water Polo Splits With Terriers and Seahawks

April 7, 2018

Siena Water Polo split on the opening day of the MAAC weekend hosted at Marist. Siena first defeated St. Francis (BK) 11-9 then fell to #18 Wagner 21-2. The Saints seven wins on the season tie last season for the most wins since 2015.

"Today went the way we wanted, we had been preparing for these teams all season and this push in the final round of MAAC," said head coach Tamara Perea. "The game against St. Francis we were always in control. I'm very proud of our composure."

Game one: Siena 11, St. Francis (BK) 9
Siena opened the MAAC weekend with a victory over the Terriers. The Saints won both matchups this season against St. Francis (BK).

Sophia Torres led the Saints with four goals. Kristen Burger and Daniella Fuertes both tallied three points for Siena. Fiona Dretzka tallied seven saves in goal and Kennedy Joseph recorded her first minutes in the cage this season and stopped four shots.

Burger started off with a power play goal followed by a Borton goal and Siena led 2-0. St. Francis (BK) followed that with two goals of their own to tie the game at two. Torres then tallied two of her four goals to put the Saints up 4-2 after one quarter played.

The Terriers began a comeback and tied the game at five goals a piece. Burger and Fuertes came back to put Siena ahead by two, 7-5 at the half.

St. Francis (BK) out scored the Saints 2-1 in the third frame but Bryar's goal kept the Saints ahead by one heading into the final frame, 8-7.

The two teams battled back and forth in the final frame with the Terriers behind by one goal, 10-9. Torres tallied her fourth goal of the game to give Siena an insurance goal. Siena stayed ahead and took the game 11-9.

"Against Wagner, we had a tough time getting on the board, but Wagner was bringing it," stated Perea. "The girls kept fighting and playing the game the way it's meant to be played. I couldn't have asked for more intensity and integrity all in the same moment."

Game Two: #18 Wager 21, Siena 2
Taking her first start in goal this season, Kennedy Joseph stopped three shots.

Wagner started the game off registering nine unanswered goals in the opening quarter. The Seahawks held the Saints to just three shots to lead 9-0 after one frame played.

Wagner continued to hold off the Saints and led 15-0 at halftime. Siena would continue to battle but the Seahawks would lead 19-0 with one quarter to play.

The Saints would not quit and Diana Fernandez scored the Saints first goal of the game to trail 19-1. Fernandez would then score a penalty goal for the second Siena goal of the game.

Wagner would hold on to take the victory 21-2.

Siena will take on Villanova (1:30 PM) and #24 Marist (6 PM) on Sunday, April 8 in Poughkeepsie, New York.
