Water Polo Falls To Villanova and Marist

Siena Women's Water Polo dropped both contests in the second day of the MAAC weekend hosted by Marist. Siena first fell 14-7 to Villanova then fell to #24 Marist 17-5.

Two of the four spots in the MAAC Tournament have been clinched after the weekend by Wagner and Marist.

Game One: Villanova 14, Siena 7
Villanova opened up scoring early in the first quarter but Daniella Fuertes who scored two goals for the Saints, picked up her first goal to tie the game at one. Clare Bryar put the Saints ahead 2-1 but the Wildcats would then score five unanswered goals to lead Siena 6-2 after one quarter played.

Villanova scored two goals in the opening minutes of the second quarter before Sara Lopez cut the deficit to five, 8-3. Diana Fernandez scored her first goal of the game followed by the second Fuertes goal as Siena cut down on the Wildcats lead 8-5 heading into halftime.

The Wildcats scored just two goals in the third frame, but was able to hold Siena scoreless to lead 10-5 with just one period left to play. The Wildcats rattled off three goals to lead 13-5, but Fernandez came right back and scored two goals on two possessions to cut the deficit 13-7.Villanova would add one more goal to take the win 14-7.

Fernandez also added three ejections drawn and one steal to her stat line. Fiona Dretzka tallied three saves and two steals splitting the time in goal with Kennedy Joseph, who started for Siena.

Game Two: #24 Marist 17, Siena 5
Marist opened up the scoring in the final game of the weekend, but Torres would respond just 25 seconds later to tie the game at one. The Red Foxes would then register four goals in the opening frame to lead Siena 5-1.

Following two Marist goals, Bryar scored her first goal of the game to trail the Red Foxes 7-2. The Red Foxes would hold the Saints to just the one Bryar goal in the period while Marist added two more in the frame to lead Siena 9-2 at the half.

Marist led Siena 11-2 but Fernandez would respond and add a Siena goal. Fiona Dretzka would make a save for the Saints and dish the ball out which would turn into a Torres goal as Marist led 11-4. The Red Foxes led 15-4 after three quarters played.

Bryar would score her second goal of the game and the only goal for Siena in the final frame. The Saints held Marist to just two goals scored in the final period as the Red Foxes took the win 17-5.

Dretzka tallied five saves, while Joseph recorded two. Torres added two assists and three steals to go along with her two goals scored.

Siena will travel to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the final MAAC weekend of the regular season. The Saints will face VMI (12 PM) and La Salle (4:30 PM) on Saturday, April 14 followed by Iona (1:30 PM) on Sunday, April 15.
