APALACHIN, NY – Siena Men's Golf's Jack Brown continued to lead the team out of the gate in fall play, doing so in the first round of the Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational on Sunday. The co-captain allowed the Saints to tie for fifth +9, 297 after one round in the 36-hole affair at The Links at Hiawatha Landing in Apalachin, NY.
Struggling with the back nine of the of the par-72, 7,104-yard course after leading the 17-team pack following nine holes, the Saints are tied with MAAC rival Monmouth entering the final round. Fellow conference foes Canisius and Rider sit tied among the team leaderboard at -3, 285, while Saint Peter's (+8, 296) is a stroke ahead of the Green and Gold. Niagara (+11, 299) is currently tied for seventh, while Iona (+12, 300) is knotted in ninth.
Brown spent a good chunk of the day with the individual lead, laying down five birdies on the front nine and one on the back en-route to his fourth round of par or better on the season. The Hudson, New Hampshire native will enter Monday's play tied with golfers from Rider and Laval University and just one stroke off the individual lead.
Following behind Brown were freshmen Jack Tobin and Nolan Crowley, who each birdied four times in the first round. Tobin shot +3, 75 to land in a tie for 26th while Tobin carded +4, 76 to end in a split for 36th.
Junior co-captain Pudge Williams birdied three times to go below his season average thus far, carding +5, 77 to land in a tie for 45th. Rounding out the team's five-man competition squad was freshman Moritz Weigold, who birdies once en-route to shooting +9, 81 and finishing the day in a tie for 64th.
Competing as an individual, sophomore Brody Yates birdied on the par-5 ninth and 18th holes to shoot +6, 78 and finish the day in a tie for 47th place individually. The Saints will conclude their fourth consecutive appearance at the tournament on Monday, Oct. 7.
