Women's Lacrosse Hosts Army West Point in Home Opener Wednesday (WATCH - 3 PM)

Saints Look to Start Home Slate Strong

The Siena women's lacrosse program takes to the newly christened Hickey Field for the first time in 2019 on Wednesday afternoon, as they will play host to Army West Point at 3 p.m.

The Green and Gold are 8-14 overall in program history in home openers, as their last home opening win came only two years ago as they defeated the University of Vermont 12-10 to open up the 2017 season at Hickey Field.

Siena looks to bounce back after a tough heartbreaking loss at Columbia to open the season. With 21 seconds remaining in the game, the Green and Gold surrendered a free-position goal, as they would fall to the Columbia Lions by a final score of 13-12 on Saturday afternoon.

The Saints would get a trio of three goal games, as Kerry GeretyNicole McNeely, and Kaitlyn Dowsett each put up three goals apiece. Juniors Therese Pitmanand Annie Brennan made up the other three goals for the Saints, as Pitman scored twice and Brennan once. Pitman also led the team in ground balls on the day with five. Goalie Sammy Horton played all 60 minutes, making 10 saves on the game.

The Saints are bouncing back from a 5-12 season in 2018, and a 1-7 mark in the MAAC a year ago. However, the Saints return two of their top three goal scorers in Annie Brennan and Kerry Gerety. The duo combined for 62 points in 2018, as they look to top that mark in 2019. Goalie Sammy Horton was a mainstay between the pipes for the Saints last season, as she played every second in front of the twine for the Green and Gold a year ago.

Siena was picked seventh in the MAAC preseason poll, garnering 24 points and a first place vote. The Saints will open up MAAC play at home on March 23 when they play host to Iona, the team picked just ahead of them in sixth in the preseason poll.
