Three members of Siena Water Polo registered in-game hat tricks as the team split a pair of matches at the Red Fox Invitational Sunday. The Saints began the day by defeating Mercyhurst, 11-3, before falling to #14 Princeton, 20-10.
Siena (3-7) raced out to a 6-1 lead at the half over the Lakers, with three scores coming in the second period from sophomore
Sophia Torres. In total, eight different Saints found the net in the match, with senior
Daniella Fuertes and sophomore
Kristen Burger adding two goals apiece. Siena outshot Mercyhurst, 23-18, with senior
Kennedy Joseph recording four saves in-net for the Green and Gold.
The Saints then took the pool against the Tigers the first time since 2014, marking the fourth time this season that they have faced off with a team inside the Collegiate Water Polo Association Top-25. The squad finished with double-digit scoring for the third straight contest, keeping with Princeton throughout the first quarter, with the teams tied at three at one point late in the period. After taking an 11-6 lead into the mid-way point, the Tigers never looked back, scoring five straight goals to begin the second half. Helping the Saints to stay on pace early-on, freshman
Georgia Vargas scored twice in the first period and finished with a hat trick, joining junior
Diana Fernandez in doing so in the match. Torres added a pair of scores to finish with five on the day, while Joseph and senior
Nichol Feldtz split time in between the pipes in the affair.
Following the split, Siena improves to 12-10 all-time against Mercyhurst, while falling to 0-6 when facing Princeton.
The Saints will now travel cross-country for their first of two planned west-coast road trips this season. Siena will play at Redlands Thursday evening at 7 PM EST (4 PM PST) before competing in four matches at the Claremont Convergence next weekend.
