Junior
Diana Fernandez netted five goals in a pair of contests Sunday, as Siena Water Polo fell twice in the final day of the Bruno Invite in Providence, RI. The Saints dropped a close 11-8 decision to Cal Lutheran in their morning action, and fell to host-team Brown, 9-5, in the tournament's final match, later in the afternoon.
Â
One of the team's two Preseason All-MAAC selections prior to the start of 2019, Fernandez found the goal three times in the first game of the day, doing so along with freshman
Georgia Vargas, who got on the board for the first time in her collegiate career. The Saints and Regals went back and forth during the first half, with Cal Lutheran holding a 5-4 advantage at the half and a 7-5 lead through three. The Regals closed out the final period by outscoring the Saints, 4-3, making up their three-point margin. Seniors
Sara Lopez and
Daniella Fuertes each found the back of the net once for their first points of the 2019 season in the affair.
Â
The Green and Gold rounded out opening week competition by facing host school Brown, who received votes in the latest Collegiate Water Polo Association Top-25. The Bears scored the afternoon's first five goals before the Saints scored three of the game's next five to make it 7-3. Brown then scored twice more to put the match away before Siena added the final two goals. Fernandez added a pair of goals in the loss, with Fuertes, Vargas and senior
Terez Touhey also finding the back of the net.
Following their first tournament of the 2019 season, Siena (0-4) will head to Lewisburg, PA to take part in the Bison Invite Feb. 9-10. The Saints will face off against MAAC rival La Salle and Gannon, while looking for revenge against host-school Bucknell and Harvard.
