Continuing a string of five straight non-conference series' to begin the season, Siena Baseball dropped both games of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader to UNC Wilmington at Brooks Field in Wilmington, NC. Kicking off a three-game weekend affair, the Saints fell to the Seahawks, 7-2, in game one before ending up on the losing end of a 10-3 decision in game two.
Facing off against UNCW for the first time since 2005, the home team pushed ahead early on in both contests, adding middle-inning run support to secure both victories and the series. After the Seahawks went ahead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the opening frame, Siena responded with a pair of their own in the top of the second, with freshman
Eddie Sweeney smacking an RBI triple to send home junior
Jonathan Crimmin and Sweeney scoring on a fielding error during the following at- bat.
With the score knotted at two entering the third, the Seahawks took a lead in the home half that they would not relinquish, with two runs coming in on an RBI ground out and an RBI single to start. UNCW later tacked on three insurance runs by way of an RBI double and a sacrifice fly in the fifth and a wild pitch in the seventh.
Embarking on his fourth start of the season, senior pitcher
Tommy Miller (1-1) put up career numbers despite taking the loss on the afternoon. The Castleton, NY native struck out a career-high 12 batters while issuing only one walk in seven innings of work. Miller was relieved by senior
John Nolan, who fanned a pair in an inning of work.
After a brief hiatus, the teams took the field to continue the second of 14 scheduled doubleheaders in store for the Saints this year. After a pair of RBI singles gave the Seahawks a 3-0 advantage in the first inning, the CAA foes used a two-run home run to take a 5-0 lead after three.
Senior
Brian Kelly scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth to put Siena on the board in the fourth inning, and the Saints showed life in the sixth with two more crossing. Freshman
Alex Milone grounded out to second base to allow senior
Matt Hamel to come home and Sweeney driving home Kelly with an RBI single to right to cut the deficit to a pair. The potential comeback was immediately silenced with a UNCW grand slam in the bottom of the sixth, and a walk with the bases loaded one inning later gave the game its final result.
Junior right-hander
Brandon White (0-2) got the nod on the mound for the second game, striking out five and walking four in five innings of work. Sophomore
Avery Short and freshmen
Noah Rubino and
Arlo Marynczak would then each put in an inning to close out the game, with Short fanning a batter and Marynczak retiring two via the strikeout.
Following the sweep, Siena will close out the weekend series against UNC Wilmington on Sunday afternoon at Brooks Field, with first pitch set for 1 PM.
